Before having a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), there are certain precautions that must be taken into account for the safety and effectiveness of the examination:
Avoiding Metal:
MRI uses strong magnetic fields, so any metal objects in the body (such as pacemakers, implants, hearing aids, dental prosthetics, or any other metal objects) can cause risks or affect the quality of the images. You should tell your doctor and MRI technician about any metal implants or devices you have.
Jewelry and personal items:
It is recommended that you remove all jewelry, watches, cell phones, credit cards (which may be magnetized) and other metal devices before the examination.
Pregnancy:
If you are pregnant or may become pregnant, tell your doctor. Although there is no evidence of harm from MRI during pregnancy, it is usually recommended to avoid MRI during the first trimester unless absolutely necessary.
Phobia or claustrophobia:
If you have a phobia of enclosed spaces or are worried about the procedure, it may be helpful to discuss this with your doctor before the test. There are sedatives or other methods that can help, if needed.
Allergy to contrast:
If contrast (contrast agent) is to be used, tell your doctor if you have a history of allergy or sensitivity to contrast materials or other substances.
Health history report:
Tell your doctor about any pre-existing conditions, such as kidney problems, that may affect the use of contrast or other aspects of the test.
Food and drink preparation:
In some cases, you may be asked not to eat or drink for a few hours before the MRI, particularly if contrast is used for the exam.
Proper preparation for an MRI scan is important for the safety and success of the procedure, so be sure to follow your doctor’s instructions.
